Hospice Midland
Hospice Midland is the community's first and only not-for-profit hospice. Our unique unit is located on the third floor of Midland Memorial Hospital.
Our services are palliative and based on the principle that as life nears its end, every individual has the right to spend their remaining days in peace and with dignity. We focus specifically on comfort, dignity and pain control, responding to the symptoms, needs and goals of the patients and families. We are dedicated to helping the terminally ill live each day to the fullest throughout the dying process.
HospiceMidland supports the patient, their family, and friends, in a setting that best fits their needs. While more than 95% of our patients are served in their own homes, the Inpatient Unit at Midland Memorial Hospital is available to patients whose needs, or the needs of their family, can be better met in an acute care setting. Visits of this nature are most often viewed as a transitional time to control symptoms until the patient can return home, or can be cared for in a less medically acute setting.
HospiceMidland's philosophy is, "neighbor caring for neighbor," and considers it an honor to care for you and your family at a very precious time in life. Our compassionate commitment to care means we are here when you need us. You may reach the HospiceMidland staff 24 hours a day at (432) 683-5600. Se Habla Español.

Be Foot Aware
Did you know your hard-working feet take about 3 million steps each year? It’s time to show them a little respect and after all, the American Podiatric Medical Association has deemed April foot health awareness month. That means now is an ideal time to show your footsies a little TLC, especially if you’re diabetic.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predict more than 15 percent of diabetics will develop a foot ulcer during their lifetime. If left unchecked, that simple foot wound can turn into a runaway infection that threatens a diabetic’s life and limb.
While early, regular foot care provides a vital ounce of prevention, Midland Memorial Hospital’s Wound Management Center also offers the latest medical advances in treating chronic and non-healing wounds.
In 2012, Midland Memorial Hospital won The Center of Distinction Award, and the Robert Warriner III, MD Center of Excellence Award. Both are national awards and the hospital competed with over 500 medical centers across the United States.
“We have a multidisciplinary team of specialists at the Wound Management Center and offer advanced wound care,” says Melissa Alworth, D.O., a wound care physician. Services include grafts, debridement, wound dressings, hyperbaric oxygen therapy and home wound care education. “The earlier you begin treatment on a diabetic ulcer in an advanced wound care clinic, the higher the likelihood that the wound will heal.”

Wound Ostomy Services
At Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH), we provide our patients who undergo ostomy surgery with the services of a CWOCN (Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse). Our CWOCN works closely with fellow nurses, physicians, dieticians and other members of the health care team to provide support and education so that the patient can return home self-sufficient and able to manage his/her ostomy.
Ostomy and continent diversion surgical procedures are fundamental to the management of several gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract diseases. The impact on the individual and his/her family is profound regardless of whether the diversion is permanent or temporary.
The relationship between the patient and the ostomy nurse does not terminate with discharge from the hospital. Regardless of whether or not the ostomy or continent diversion was performed at Midland Memorial Hospital, the services of the ostomy nurse are available. Our CWOCN is always just a phone call away. And, if the problem cannot be resolved, an outpatient visit can be arranged.
For more information about our Wound Ostomy services please call (432) 221-1689 or email judy.shepherd@midland-memorial.com

Stroke Awareness
A stroke can happen to anyone at any time. Strokes are the number one cause of adult disability in the United States. Every 40 seconds, someone in the USA suffers from a stroke.
A stroke can be caused through one of two different mechanisms: a blockage in the artery feeding the brain OR if an artery feeding the brain bursts.
In either case, a part of the brain does not get enough oxygen and begins to die. Because brain cells do not die immediately, the person suffering from the stroke may have time to accidentess medical care. Stroke care is dependent on the type of the stroke, but all stroke care is time dependent - meaning the longer the symptoms continue, the worse the results may be.
When you think someone could be having a stroke, perform the FAST test.

Weigh to Success
Weigh to Success at Midland Memorial Hospital is here to help you take control of obesity and your life.
Our highly trained team is committed to providing the highest level of patient care every step of the way. If you have tried non-surgical weight loss therapies without success, weight loss surgery may be your solution. Studies demonstrate that weight loss surgery yields the longest period of sustained weight loss in patients who have failed other non-surgical therapies. For best results, we have found patients need to actively participate in a multi-disciplinary weight loss program, which includes nutritional, emotional and exercise counseling.
Weigh to Success at Midland Memorial Hospital provides a team approach to helping you reach your weight loss goals. We provide you with the education and lifelong support through our comprehensive program so that you will be successful! Your education class will teach you what you need to know prior to surgery, what to expect while in the hospital, and how to take care of yourself when you are discharged to return home.
If you are ready to start losing weight and get healthy please contact Sundae Greenwood, our program coordinator, at 432-638-8081 or by email at sundae.greenwood@midland-memorial.com.
