Versant RN Residency

Midland Memorial Hospital's RN Residency consists of 25 percent classroom instruction and 75 percent hands-on training at the bedside. It features instructor-led courses on current and emerging clinical guidelines and standards; clinical preceptors who provide personalized bedside training; mentors who offer personal support and career development guidance; and, debriefing sessions that create a forum for exchange among residents. The residency also uses state-of-the-art web-based technology to efficiently execute the program.

FAQ

Who is eligible for the Nurse Residency Program?
New graduate RNs and RNs with less than 6 months experience are eligible to apply for the nurse residency program. Others will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

What are the licensure requirements?
You must be signed up to take the NCLEX within 30 days of employment. You must also have a GN license from the BON.

When is the next residency?
We have 3 residency programs per year that begin the beginning of the month in January, June, and September.The program through MMH requires a 2-year commitment upon completion of the RN Residency program. Please contact Human Resources for contract specifics.

When is the deadline to apply?
Applications are open at all times during the year. Please indicate which cohort you will be applying for in the application. Deadline for submission is at least 1month before the start of the cohort.

What paperwork gets me started?

  • At least two letters of reference from a clinical instructor, preceptor, or direct supervisor on letterhead.

What is the schedule? Versant is an 18-22 week program that requires a full time commitment. Time off is granted only on an emergency basis during this program.

Can I go to any unit? Versant residents can be placed in all units with openings. Limited spaces may exist in the specialty areas, i.e., Labor & Delivery, Nursery, Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units.

Meet our Nursing Leadership Team

Brenda Evans, BSN, RN, CCRN: Brenda is the Director of Medical/Oncology. She has been employed with MMH since 1989. Brenda earned her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and her Associate Degree of Nursing from Odessa College. She is certified as an ACLS Instructor, BLS Instructor, SWTA Family Advocate, Critical Care Registered Nurse, and Chemobiotherapy Provider. Brenda is a member of the American Association for Critical Care Nurses and the Oncology Nursing Society. At MMH, she serves on the Nurse Staffing Advisory Council, the Research/Evidence-Based Practice Council, the Clinical Value Analysis Team, the Performance Appraisal Task Force, the Cancer Committee, and the Radiation Safety Committee.

Brenda Kingdon, DNP, BSN, RN, CNOR, CCNA-BC: Brenda is the Director of Perioperative Services. She has been employed with MMH since 2010. Brenda obtained her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from North Florida University, her Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree from Brandon University, and her Associates Degree in Nursing from Misericordia Hospital. She is a Certified Nurse Operating Room and has a Canadian Certification in Nursing Administration-Board Certified. Brenda is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the Association of Perioperative Nurses, and the Texas Nurses Association. At MMH, she serves on the Clinical Quality Professional Practice Council, the Nurse Staffing Advisory Council, and the Research/Evidence-Based Practice Council.

Cori Armstead, BSN, RN, CEN: Cori is the Director of Emergency Services, Trauma Services, and Telephone Nurse Triage. She has been employed with MMH since 2001. Cori earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Texas at El Paso and her Associates Degree in Nursing from Angelo State University. She is currently in the Masters of Science in Nursing program with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. Cori is a Certified Emergency Nurse. She is the coordinator for MMH's Sexual Assualt Nurse Examiner program and is certified as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. Cori is a faculty instructor for Trauma Nursing Core Course and is an instructor for Emergency Nurses Pediatric Course. She is a member of Emergency Nurses Association, the Texas Nurses Association, and the International Association for Forensic Nurses. At MMH, Cori serves on the Professional Development Council, the Nurse Staffing Advisory Council, the Education Council, the Patient Access and Throughput Team, the Point of Care Committee, the Hospital Emergency Incident Command System Committee, and the Core Measures Focus Group.

Kimberly Meyers, MSN, RN: Kimberly is the Director of Critical Care Services. She has been employed with MMH since 2011. Kimberly obtained her Masters of Science in Nursing degree from Lubbock Christian University and her Associates Degree in Nursing from Covenant School of Nursing.

Lenora Sevcik, MSN, RN: Lenora is the Director of the Women's and Children's Division. She has been employed with MMH since 2005. Lenora earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing and her Masters of Science in Nursing from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Nursing Practice.  She is a member of the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses, the Texas Nurses Association, and the American Organization of Nurse Executives. Lenora is the Secretary/Treasurer for the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses and a Board Member of the Texas Nurses Association-District 21. At MMH, she serves on the Clinical Quality Professional Practice Council, the Nurse Staffing Advisory Council, the Policy and Procedures Committee, the Hospital Emergency Incident Command System Committee, the Performance Improvement Committee, and the Point of Care Testing Committee.

Michael Hall, BSN, RN: Michael is the Director of Inpatient Surgical Services. He has been employed with MMH since 1998. Michael obtained his Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Texas El Paso and his Associates Degree in Nursing from Odessa College. At MMH, he serves on the Clinical Informatics Council and the Document Review Committee.

Robyn Kedzie, MHSA, BSN, RN: Robyn is the Director of Quality and Risk Management. She has been employed with MMH since 1979. Robyn earned her Masters in Health Services Administration from Saint Joseph's College and her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Houston. She is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality and a Certified Case Manager. Robyn is a member of the American Nurses Association, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the National Association for Healthcare Quality, the Case Management Society of America, the Academy of Certified Case Managers, and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.  At MMH, she is a member the Quality Improvement Committee of the Board, the Performance Improvement Committee, the Ethics Committee, the Infection Control Committee, the Institutional Review Board Committee, the Core Measures Focus Group, and the Code 4 Committee.

Shared Accountability

Midland Memorial Hospital adopted the Nursing Bylaws and Shared Accountability Structure on December 6, 2007. The Bylaws were revised September 26, 2008 to incorporate all Patient Care Service areas. The councils that participate in this process consist of the Patient Care Services Congress, the Clinical Quality Professional Practice Council,the Clinical Informatics Council, the Professional Development Council,the Patient Care Leadership Council,the People Council, the Research / Evidence-Based Practice Council, and the Nurse Staffing Advisory Council. The council meet on a monthly basis and consist of frontline staff members from most departments and units throughout the hospital.

The Patient Care Services Congress serves as the decision making and governing body for nursing and allied health, providing strategic and leadership direction to the councils. The Congress also allocates resources, provides support for a Magnet culture that enhances the practice of professionalism, and serves as a clearinghouse for issues and disseminates assignments to the appropriate council(s). The Patient Care Services Congress is responsible for resolving issues that overlap councils, budget constraints, goal setting, annual reviews of the bylaws, strategic plan, and goals, referring issues to the appropriate councils, coordinating interdisciplinary interaction, and maintaining and recommending the bylaws.

The Clinical Quality Professional Practice Council monitors patient care outcomes using evidence-based practice and process and performance improvement strategies to provide the highest quality patient care. This council also examines practice issues, questions, or discrepancies and identifies resources and mechanisms for the development and implementation of best practices in the delivery of patient care. The Clinical Quality Professional Practice Council is responsible for audits, monitoring practices, safety practices, standards of practice, incident reporting, product evaluation, patient satisfaction scores, effectiveness of performance improvements, quality assurance, quality improvement, celebrations, service excellence, education and adherence to hospital procedure, performance assessment, patient care model, professional practice model, patient acuity, and nursing peer review and safe harbor.

The Clinical Informatics Council integrates clinical science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge in clinical practice. This council facilitates the integration of data, information, and knowledge to support patients, clinicians, and other providers in their decision making in all roles and settings. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology. The Clinical Informatics Council is responsible for all aspects of the Electronic Medical Record, the Document Review Committee, forms, and product evaluation for information technology products.

The Professional Development Council defines, implements, and maintains educational standards that promote professional growth and ongoing clinical competency. The Professional Development Council is responsible for conferences, certifications, educational in-services, mentorship programs, preceptor programs, required education, orientation, outside educational funding, career advancement, Guidelines, Policy, and Procedure Committee, and the clinical ladder.

The Patient Care Leadership Council assists in shaping a healthy work environment and achieving a professional culture that recruits and retains expert clinicians. The Patient Care Leadership Council is responsible for The Science: Managing the Business (financial management, human resource management, performance improvement, foundational thinking skills, technology, strategic management, and appropriate clinical practice knowledge), The Art: Leading the People (human resource leadership skills, relationship management and influencing behaviors, diversity, and shared decision making), and The Leader Within: Creating the Leader in Yourself (personal and professional accountability, career planning, personal journey disciplines, and reflective practice reference behaviors / tenets).

The People Council builds strong internal and external relationships, promotes teamwork, nurtures an environment of excellence and provides a positive, creative, work place. Additionally, this council uses creative approaches to promote and recognize the spirit and Forces of Magnetism, and develops communication / marketing plans for patient care services, and mentors other hospitals in their pursuit of Magnet destination. The People Council is responsible for self scheduling, assignment methods, party events, dress code, interdepartmental relationships, recruitment and retention, MMH Versant RN New Graduate Residency Task Force, multidisciplinary relationships, employee satisfaction, staff / physician relationships, and other celebrations.

The Research / Evidence-Based Practice Council provides opportunities to support research activities and establishes a forum for the integration and dissemination of research and evidence-based practice. The Research Council is responsible for the use of research techniques to evaluate new products, partnerships with colleges and universities, evidence-based practice, education regarding evidence-based practice and research, promoting publications, and reviewing FMEA annually.

The Nurse Staffing Advisory Council addresses the staffing needs of the organization. The Nurse Staffing Advisory Council is responsible for reviewing and improving the written nurse staffing plan, considering critical staffing factors in determining staffing levels, considering nursing sensitive outcomes in evaluating the adequacy of staffing, facilitating timely and effective identification of concerns about the adequacy of staffing, and assurance of the fatigue management plan in place and monitored.

Nursing Education & Professional Development

Our education and professional development is led by several clinical educators who are experts in a multitude of specialty areas. As healthcare is forever changing, MMH makes a commitment to ensure our nurses have evidence-based education, training, and the expertise required to provide excellent, professional care to our community. Our educators deliver evidence-based education and training incorporating adult learning theories. Abundant opportunities allow the professional nurse to expand his or her knowledge. The nursing educators deliver the following training courses on site: Healthcare Provider Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (HP-CPR), HeartSaver Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (HS-CPR), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC), Pediatrics Advanced Life Support (PALS), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Sugar & Safe care, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, Emotional support (STABLE), Intermediate EKG, Advanced EKG, and Intra Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), and Critical Care Class.

MEET OUR NURSE EDUCATORS

Melissa Weaver, BSN, RN: Melissa is the Nurse Educator for the Critical Care Services division. She has been employed with MMH since 2008. Melissa earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing Degree and her Bachelors of Science in Biology from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. She is a Certified CPR Instructor. Melissa is a member of the Texas Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau. At MMH, she serves on the Nurse Staffing Advisory Council, the Glycemic Control Committee, the Ventilator Associated Pneumonia Task Force, the CAT/Code 4 Task Force, the Sepsis Task Force, and the Stroke Task Force.

Raceli Gibson, BSN, RN - Raceli is the Nurse Educator for the Emergency Services division. She has been employed with MMH since 1997. Raceli obtained her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of the Visayas. She is currently enrolled in the Masters of Science in Nursing program with the University of Texas at El Paso. Raceli is certified in ACLS, PALS, ENPC, TNCC, NRP, and STABLE. She teaches ACLS, Intermediate EKG, and the Critical Care Class. At MMH, Raceli serves on the Professional Development Council, the Code 4 committee, the CAT Team, the Policy and Procedures Committee, the Core Measures Focus Group, the Critical Value Analysis Team, and the Glycemic Control Committee.

Anna Hulslander, RN, CHPN: Anna is the Nurse Educator for the Medical/Oncology Division. She has been employed with MMH since 2010. Anna earned her Associates Degree in Nursing from Lee College and is currently enrolled in the Bachelors of Science in Nursing program with Grand Canyon University. She is a Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse. Anna is a member of the American Nurses Association, the Texas Nurses Association, and the Oncology Nursing Society. At MMH, she serves on the Research/Evidence-Based Practice Council, the Glycemic Control Committee, the Fall Committee, the CAT/CODE Task Force, the Synergy Task Force, the Clinical Value Analysis Team, the Versant Debriefing Committee, and the Stroke Program Committee.

Rebekah Powers, MSN, RN-BC: Rebekah is the Nurse Educator for the Inpatient Surgical Services division. She has been employed with MMH since 2003. Rebekah obtained her Master's of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso, her Bachelor's in Humanities from University of Texas Permian Basin, and her Associates Degree in Nursing from Rend Lake College. She is currently enrolled in the DNP Program at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Rebekah is certified in Nursing Professional Development and has a certificate in Education and in Evidence-Based Practice. She is a BLS instructor and a PALS instructor. Rebekah is a member of the Texas Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International, and the National Nursing Staff Development Organization. At MMH, she serves on the Clinical Quality Professional Practice Council, the Evidence-Based Practice/Research Council, the Institutional Review Board, the Simulation Center Advisory Board, the Glycemic Control Committee, and is the coordinator for Student Scheduling for Clinical Placement.

Darla Walden, BSN, RN: Darla is the Nurse Educator for the Women's & Children's Services division. She has been employed with MMH since 2010. Darla earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix and her Associates Degree in Nursing from Odessa College. She is currently enrolled in the Masters of Science in Nursing program at the University of Phoenix. Darla is an instructor for the STABLE program and oversees the PALS program. She is a member of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses, the National Nursing Staff Development Organization, the Texas Nurses Association, the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses, and the West Texas Perinatal Leadership Group. At MMH, Darla serves on the Education Council and participates with the Versant RN Residency.

Amanda Shelton, MSN, RN: Amanda is the Nurse Educator for Perioperative Services. She has been employed with MMH since 2011. Amanda obtained her Masters of Science in Nursing Administration Degree and her Bachelors of Science in Nursing Degree from West Texas A&M University. She is a member of the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses and the Texas Council of PeriOperative Registered Nurses. At MMH, Amanda serves on the Infection Control Committee, the Education Council, and the Versant Task Force.

Mirella Valenzuela, BSN, RN: Mirella is the Nurse Educator for Inpatient Diabetes. She has been employed with MMH since 2009. Mirella obtained her Bachelors of Science in Nursing Degree from the University of Phoenix and her Associates Degree in Nursing from Midland College. She is a member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators. At MMH, Mirella serves on the Clinical Quality Professional Practice Council, the Glycemic Control Committee, and is a Qualified Spanish Medical Interpreter for the Cultural Diversity Program.

Jenny Delk-Fikes, BSN, RN-BC: Jenny is the Clinical Excellence Manager. She has been employed with MMH since 2000. Jenny earned her Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of Phoenix and her Associate Degree in Nursing from Midland College. She is currently enrolled in the Masters of Science in Nursing program with the University of Phoenix. Jenny is certified in Nursing Professional Development. She is a member of the National Nursing Staff Development Organization, Texas Nurses Association, and the American Nurses Association. Jenny is the Secretary for the Texas Nurses Association District 21 Chapter. At MMH, she serves on the Clinical Quality Professional Practice Council, the Clinical Informatics Council, the Professional Development Council, the People Council, the Nurse Staffing Advisory Council, and the Research/Evidence-Based Practice Council.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

CERTIFICATION PROGRAM:

Midland Memorial Hospital supports and recognizes those nurses who choose to continue their education. Yearly, a certification fair is held to promote the various certifications that are available for all areas and units. When an employee obtains a certification in their specialty area, the employee receives an increase in pay.

LVN-to-RN PROGRAM:

Full time LVN's who are in the LVN-to-RN transition program at Midland College or Odessa College can work 24 hours per week and receive pay for 40 hours per week during the school year.

ADVANCING CLINCIAL EXCELLENCE PROGRAM:

The Midland Memorial Foundation, Midland Memorial Hospital, and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Anita Perry School of Nursing have joined together to provide scholarships to employees who wish to take their education to the next level. Nurses can receive their Bachelors or Masters level nursing degrees at little or no cost. This program started in January 2009 and is scheduled to run for at least three years.
