Family Health & Wellness 2012

Family Health & WellnessAttention all moms! June is national Men’s Health Month and Aug. 5 is Kids’ Health Day, making now the perfect time to encourage your husband and children to eat more nutritious meals, get plenty of exercise and be more proactive about their health.

First, let’s talk about the men in your life. Believe it or not, men lead women in all of the top 10 causes of death.
  • One reason is women are 100 percent more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventive services than men.
  • Men are also less likely to monitor their diets and nutrition, which leads to an increased risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and even some cancers.
Encourage the men in your life to get a routine physical once a year and stop smoking if they are a smoker. Prevention and early detection can be key to protecting your loved one from diseases or at least increasing the chance for a positive outcome.

Next, let’s take a look at your kids health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years, putting them at risk for diabetes, which now effects about 1 in every 400 children and adolescents. But parents can reverse the trend by being more mindful of what their children eat.
  • Entice them to eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Don’t let them skip breakfast
  • If you have to do fast food, choose wisely avoiding fried foods and opting for some of the healthier options many restaurants now offer.
