October is Breast Cancer Awareness
Month!
About 1 in 8 US women will develop invasive breast cancer over the
course of her lifetime. Most women should have an annual screening mammogram
starting at age 40, unless their doctor recommends otherwise. Lumps, skin
dimplings or other breast changes should also be checked by your doctor. It is
also important to know your family history of breast cancer. Ask your relatives
if any women in the family have had breast cancer, and whether it occurred pre-
or post menopause. The earlier the onset of a relative’s breast cancer, the
sooner you may want to begin screenings.
