Message From the President
Welcome to the new Midland-Memorial.com! I hope you will find our improved website to be an easy-to-use, comprehensive source for all of your healthcare information needs.
We, at MMH are committed to providing outstanding care and service to all of our patients. Over the last few years, we have devoted ourselves to improving the quality of care we provide and measuring our performance against national benchmarks. We have made great strides, especially in assuring consistent application of the best practices in the care of several categories of patients. We believe our patients, current and future, deserve access to the best available information upon which to judge our performance, and I encourage you to check out the 'Quality of Care' tab for the latest updates.
These are exciting times at MMH, as we realized our community's vision by building a new, state of the art Patient Tower, which opened on December 19th, 2012. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our donors, and the voters of Midland County Hospital District, in providing funding for this $175 million improvement.
Midland Memorial Hospital is your hospital. If there is anything we can do to serve you better, please let me know! I would welcome your email at russell.meyers@midland-memorial.com

History
Midland Memorial Hospital, the only not-for-profit hospital in Midland County, Texas was established by prominent community leaders with one mission: "to make quality healthcare available to all residents of Midland County". Midland Memorial Hospital was built with funds donated by individuals, corporations and foundations as a nonprofit, community-based hospital, offering medical care to all Midlanders, regardless of their ability to pay.
The hospital opened its doors on July 11, 1950, as a community owned, 75-bed hospital, serving the nearly 22,000 people who resided in Midland County. The hospital was staffed with 78 employees and 26 physicians. The 58,694 square foot, "state-of-the-art" medical facility cost $1,372,000.
Over succeeding decades, Midland Memorial Hospital has changed dramatically to meet the needs of a dynamic community. The hospital at 2200 West Illinois has undergone numerous physical expansions and introduced many innovative programs such as the Heart Institute and various rehabilitation programs. Additional campuses offer supplementary programs and services including treatments for cancer (Allison Cancer Center), women's and children's health care services ( West Campus ) and the various outpatient programs offered at both Main Campus and West Campus.
Through prudent fiscal management of committed volunteer boards, Midland Memorial Hospital has always provided medical care to all Midlanders, regardless of their ability to pay. However, due to the continuing demands from uninsured and underinsured patients, eventually a change in structure was required. In August, 1977, the Hospital District was formed and a modest tax levied to support ONLY the care of indigent patients. Now, the Board of Directors of the Midland County Hospital District (elected by the voters) add their counsel and insight to the able direction of the volunteer Boards of Trustees and Governors, in guiding the further development of Midland Memorial Hospital.
For over 60 years, we have maintained our pledge to deliver quality health care to the residents of Midland County and the surrounding region. Our staff, volunteers, facilities, and services reflect this commitment today.

Volunteer Auxiliary
Midland Memorial Hospital’s Auxiliary Department has origins that are deeply rooted in the Midland Community and dates back to January 1950, months before the hospital opened its doors in July 1950. The 5013C organization’s main purpose is to provide volunteer assistance for non-professional tasks within the hospital. Another component of this invaluable department is the funding they provide to MMH for the purchase of medical equipment. Our exceptional volunteers have contributed over $20 million in equipment and volunteer hours (calculated at minimum wage).
Volunteer Program Volunteers are required to attend orientation, annual education updates, wear uniforms, pay $7 for annual dues and attend 5 general meetings per year. Orientations for new volunteers are held monthly.
There are currently 119 adult members who dedicate a minimum of four hours once a week, in 15 different areas between the Main and West Campus.
The Auxiliary also sponsors the Junior Volunteer group. This volunteer group consists of young people aged 15-18 who have the option to work in many different areas of the hospital. This program is active only during the summer months and gives students the opportunity to gain community service hours.
Service award pins are presented for donated service. A pin represents the first 100 hours. Thereafter, bars are given to represent each 500-hour increment of time.
The auxiliary elects five officers each year for a leadership team that meets on a monthly basis. This team along with chairmen from various departments within Auxiliary comprises the Executive Board, which is responsible for decision making for the Auxiliary Department.
For more information on the Auxiliary department or how to get involved, contact Kimberly Modisett, Director of Auxiliary Services, at (432) 230-345 or via email at kim.modisett@midland-memorial.com.

Auxiliary Accomplishments
Over the course of ten years, the Auxiliary has given $250,000 of equipment every 18 months. In the recent past, the Auxiliary department has given $100,000 worth of transport chairs and 2 ultrasound machines at a cost of $160,000. Other great and remarkable investments, include $117, 017 for Renal Dialysis equipment, $125,000 Health Science Library, $112,000 for new ambulances, a $225,000 Breast Biopsy machine and state-of-the-art ultra sound machines for $240,000! These donations are made possible from revenue generated from gift shop, pop corn and payroll deduction sales!
Educational Program The Midland Memorial Hospital Explorer Medical Post is organized through the auxiliary department and is a function of the Boy Scouts of America. The program is open to youths ages 15-19. The main purpose of the group is career exploration of the various medical fields available. Meetings are held twice monthly. Cost is $25 per year.

Awards & Recognition
MMH has received several awards recognizing the hospital and its personnel for our great patient care. We have received these awards because of teamwork. There are many people including doctors, nurses, technologists and pharmacists who make these teams work well for our patients; but the most important person on this team is you, the patient.
In 2013, for the 4th year in a row, MMH received the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Heart Failure Gold Plus Award. This highest honor for excellence in heart failure care means the hospital performed at or above 90 percent on multiple care standards that have been shown to decrease mortality and improve longevity in heart failure patients. The hospital also received a Center of Distinction Award for our Wound Management Center as well as a Pathway to Excellence award by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). MMH has recently been certified as a Stroke Center of Excellence by the accrediting body, DNV; a Breast Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology; and the only Certified Quality Breast Center in the Permian Basin, as recognized by the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers Program (NQMBC).
The American Heart Association's collaborative quality improvement program, called Get With The Guidelines, is a way hospital can demonstrate adherence to evidenced-based care of patients hospitalized with coronary artery disease, heart failure or stroke. The guidelines range from simple processes such as counseling patients to stop smoking, to complex processes such as administering certain medications within a certain period of time for emergent situations. The goal of the collaboratives is to improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital re-admissions.
AHA/ACC Secondary Prevention Guidelines (American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology)
These guidelines have been adopted as secondary prevention. Secondary prevention refers to preventing any further heart damage after an individual has been diagnosed with heart problems or suffered a heart attack.
All patients are encouraged to know their disease process, which will enable them to be an active participant in their care. In order to help accomplish our goal, heart attack patients are provided with a Heartworks brochure. This informational guide educates the patient about the procedure and answers questions they may have after being diagnosed with a heart disease.
We are devoted to offering the best care to our heart patients and will encourage them to make lifestyle changes. Patients are also highly recommended to comply with therapies given at the time of discharge. Following this regimen will significantly reduce the chances of a reoccurrence
