Total Knee Replacement Total Joint CenterServices

Total Knee Replacement is a surgical procedure in which damaged parts of the knee are removed and replace with an artificial component. The ends of the thigh bone (femur) and the shin bone (tibia) are cut and removed to allow the prosthesis to be implanted. There are two parts of the prosthesis, one part on the end of the femur and the other part on the tibia which are cemented into place using a specific type of bone cement. The prosthesis is made of titanium metal and is lightweight, weighing approximately 15-20 ounces.

Total Knee Replacement may be recommended if:

  • You have knee pain and have failed conservative treatment such as physical therapy, injections, or the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDS)
  • You are unable to perform daily activities or physical activities of interest
  • You have arthritis in the knee
  • There is decreased movement and/or function of the knee
