Cardiopulmonary & Neurology

The Cardiopulmonary and Neurology Department at Midland Memorial Hospital offers a wide variety of services to help diagnose and treat specific disease processes. The most commonly diagnosed and treated disease processes consist of those dealing with the lungs, heart, and nervous system.

The department is primarily staffed by Respiratory Therapists who are specialists in aiding patients with the relief of symptoms as they relate to certain ailments. Respiratory Therapists are found in every aspect of patient care and treat patients at every stage of life.

We have several different areas of expertise and different methods to help. The following is just a small sampling of what is offered:

Cardiopulmonary:

MECHANICAL VENTILIATION - Initiation, maintenance, and monitoring of the machines used to assist in breathing.

SMALL VOLUME NEBULIZER (SVN) - Used to deliver medication directly to the lungs and ease shortness of breath.

ARTERIAL BLOOD GAS (ABG) - A diagnostic blood test to determine the proper functioning of the lungs and kidneys.

PULSE OXIMETRY - A non-invasive method to measure the oxygen in your blood.

INTERMITTENT POSITIVE PRESSURE BREATHING (IPPB) - Used to help patients take a deep breath while at the same time delivering medications directly to the lung.

BiPAP/CPAP - Machines used to help maintain a proper airway and help aid in maintaining oxygen levels, primarily during sleep.

Neurology:

ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (EKG) - This is a diagnostic test that analyzes the electrical activity of the heart.

HOLTER MONITOR - A holter monitor is an instrument worn twenty-four (24) hours at a time that records EKG information during normal activities. The recorded material is analyzed for arrhythmias and other abnormalities.

STRESS TEST - This test is used to evaluate the heart and vascular system during exercise, usually while the patient is walking on a treadmill.

ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAM (EEG) - This is a non-invasive test that measures the electrical activity of the brain (brain waves) using highly sensitive electrodes and recording equipment.

EVOKED POTENTIALS

  • Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) - This test measures the speed and intensity of electrical signals that travel along nerves using small electrical shocks and analyzes the time it takes the muscles to respond to these signals.
  • Electromyography (EMG) - This exam can measure the electrical activity of a muscle by placing a small needle electrode into the affected muscle.
  • Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) - This exam analyzes the visual pathway from the eye along the optic nerve to the brain.
  • Brain Auditory Evoked Response (ABER) - This is a test that detects the possible abnormalities in the electrical activity of the cochlea (the "hearing" part of the ear) and the auditory pathways in the brain.
  • Infant Hearing Screen (HIS) - This examination is performed on all newborn infants prior to discharge. A small microphone is placed in the ear canal to measure sound waves generated in the cochlea (the "hearing" part of the ear) in response to click and tones.

BRONCHOSCOPY- This invasive procedure uses a thin, lighted tube inserted through the nose or mouth and allows an examination of the air passages leading the lungs,as well as the lungs. Samples of lung secretions and/or tissue (biopsy) may be taken for diagnostic purposes.

PULMONARY FUNCTION TEST (PFT) - This procedure is used to measure the lung function, specifically the measurement of the amount (volume) and speed (flow) of air that can be inhaled and exhaled.

Diagnostic Sleep Center
The Diagnostic Sleep Center of Midland is one of the most technologically advanced sleep centers in West Texas. Our staff is trained and licensed in the acquisition of sleep testing to assist the physician in diagnosing your specific problem. We know that many common elements from high blood pressure to obesity are linked with sleep related problems. If you believe you need help, contact your physician to acquire an order for a study. After obtaining the order, give us a call and we will set up an appointment.

These are just a few of the services we offer in the Cardiopulmonary and Neurology Department. If you have any specific questions or need more information regarding our department, please contact us at (432) 685-1623.

Hospice Midland

Hospice Midland is the community's first and only not-for-profit hospice. Our unique unit is located on the third floor of Midland Memorial Hospital.

Our services are palliative and based on the principle that as life nears its end, every individual has the right to spend their remaining days in peace and with dignity. We focus specifically on comfort, dignity and pain control, responding to the symptoms, needs and goals of the patients and families. We are dedicated to helping the terminally ill live each day to the fullest throughout the dying process.

HospiceMidland supports the patient, their family, and friends, in a setting that best fits their needs. While more than 95% of our patients are served in their own homes, the Inpatient Unit at Midland Memorial Hospital is available to patients whose needs, or the needs of their family, can be better met in an acute care setting. Visits of this nature are most often viewed as a transitional time to control symptoms until the patient can return home, or can be cared for in a less medically acute setting.

HospiceMidland's philosophy is, "neighbor caring for neighbor," and considers it an honor to care for you and your family at a very precious time in life. Our compassionate commitment to care means we are here when you need us. You may reach the HospiceMidland staff 24 hours a day at (432) 683-5600. Se Habla Español.
