New Patient Tower Updates

12/26/11
This week the mechanical contactor will begin testing the water lines and HVAC systems to insure they are functioning properly. Starting next week, the contractor will turn on the new patient tower’s utility services, floor by floor. This process will take about one month, but it is considered an important construction milestone as it indicates that the building is officially “dried in.’’ Millwork, flooring, and other temperature-sensitive installations can then begin. Inspection has been completed and certification has been granted for 3 of the 6 elevators to allow them to be operated for construction use. As the contractors utilize the interior elevators to move materials and equipment, the cabs will be carefully protected from damage. By mid-January the service elevators hanging on the northwest corner outside the tower will be removed so that the curtain wall can be completed.

11/22/11
The curtain wall (exterior elements) of the New Patient Tower continues to progress. You may have noticed a new element called shade screens on the building. They look like eyebrows across the window ribbons of the hospital, and are best seen on the east and south side. The eyebrows provide a shade factor against the strong West Texas sun and represent a small component of our overall energy efficiency program. The permanent roof is being installed - a multiple layer system that includes insulation provided by a Styrofoam material combined with concrete and a permanent thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO)membrane. TPO is a single-ply roofing membrane that is heat-reflective and provides exceptional resistance to ultraviolet, ozone and chemical exposure, producing excellent energy-efficiency. Heavy demolition is occurring in the old ED expansion area. This area is being renovated to become our new cafeteria. The new area will seat three times the capacity of the existing cafeteria. It will include booths, tables, and a barstool countertop overlooking the courtyard. The expanded area and increased food variety will benefit our visitors and employees.

10/24/11
Some interesting new features are starting to appear outside the building on the ground floor. Steel canopy structures are being installed at the main entrance and the ambulatory ED entrance. A concrete wall has been built at the back of the healing garden area – it will eventually support a trellis, helping to create a shaded, peaceful space for our patients, visitors and staff members to find respite…We are working with our landscape architect on revised plans that will use xeriscaping principles to minimize water usage throughout the campus. The sole exception to this philosophy will be the healing garden, where we hope to establish and support a much more lush environment.

10/10/11
Progress continues on the new patient tower construction. This week, foundation and steel work will begin on the main entrance. The entry area will include a circular driveway, covered walkway, and glass storefront. Just outside the entrance will be the healing garden, with lush landscaping, outdoor seating, and a water feature within which we will recognize the major donors to the Campaign for Tomorrow. In light of the severe drought conditions we have experienced over the past year, landscaping has become a major concern. We met last week with the project’s landscape architect, and are working on a plan that will incorporate significantly more river rock and crushed granite, along with the low-maintenance trees and shrubs already planted. By moving to a xeriscape approach, we can help conserve water and still develop interesting, beautiful grounds. The biggest challenge will be creation of the healing garden, which is likely to be the one area requiring significant irrigation. We are now exploring the possibility of digging one or more on-site water wells to help meet our needs. Inside the building some finishes are starting to take shape. Sheetrock is going up on the 1st and 3rd floors, and some bathrooms are beginning to be tiled.

Campaign for Tomorrow

In 1947, the citizens of Midland came together to answer that question by building Midland Memorial Hospital. Opening our doors in 1950 as a non-profit, community-owned hospital, we have been caring for the citizens of Midland by delivering the best health care possible to you and your family.

We are now faced with critical challenges. Our 1950’s building can no longer support the quality of patient care that we believe you have a right to expect from your hospital. The population growth and the advances in technology we have experienced, particularly in the last 15 years, have put enormous pressure on patient care areas such as Critical Care, Intensive Care and Emergency. These units are overcrowded and delivering patient care is a daily struggle. We can no longer allow this situation to continue.

The challenges facing our hospital make recruiting physicians to Midland difficult. Today’ s young physicians come out of residency having been exposed to the latest trends in medicine, which makes trying to recruit them to a hospital with stumbling blocks to effective patient care almost impossible. Our doctor shortage is a critical condition, and we must address this now before we are in crisis.

We believe a first–class hospital is a necessity for Midland, not a luxury. We recognize that there are many worthy fund–drives vying for your attention, but we believe our hospital is in a class by itself. Is there anything more important than your health? Today, when you are in good health, the state of our hospital may not seem so important. But the day you have your heart attack or your spouse has a stroke or your child is in an accident, and the doors of our Emergency Room burst open with you or your loved one on the gurney, the state of our hospital is suddenly the most important thing in your life. It is, as the picture below says, “worth a million.”

Help us be ready for that day when we must care for you.

Join our Campaign for Tomorrow and build for better patient care.
