"Providing philanthropic support to Midland Memorial Hospital since 1945"
Click here to view the latest edition of Focus on The Future Newsletter.
Midland Memorial Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation organized exclusively for the benefit of Midland Memorial Hospital. Governed by a volunteer board, the Foundation was established in 1945 for the purpose of raising funds for a community hospital. Since Midland Memorial Hospital opened in 1950, the Foundation has been active in securing additional gifts for the expansion of the physical plants, purchase of new equipment, and initiation of valuable new programs and services.
The hospital was established by prominent community leaders with one mission, "to make quality healthcare available in this region". It was built with funds donated by individuals, corporations and foundations as a nonprofit, community-based hospital, offering medical care to all Midlanders, regardless of their ability to pay.
The Foundation's Board of Governors recognize that philanthropy will not only continue to play a significant role in providing funds for Midland Memorial Hospital but that the benevolence of donors will become the critical link between community and regional needs and the quality of care provided.
Midland Memorial Foundation gratefully acknowledges a rich history of philanthropic support and is committed to broadening our fundraising efforts so Midland Memorial Hospital can continue to meet the health care needs of a growing and dynamic community and region.
We invite you to explore our site to find out more about our current projects, special events and how you can support the mission of Midland Memorial Hospital.

Faces of Philanthropy
"People of Extraordinary Generosity"
Establishment of the Edwin H. Magruder, Jr. Endowment Fund
Ed Magruder, Jr.’s daughters, Elaine Magruder, Fran Sherpa and Kay Hawklee, have chosen to honor their father by establishing the Edwin H. Magruder, Jr. Endowment Fund, which creates a perpetual means for friends and family members to pay tribute to Ed, while generously supporting Midland Memorial Hospital at the same time. Midland Memorial Foundation is very grateful to Ed’s daughters for their thoughtfulness and generosity in founding this endowment fund.
Ed has been a staunch supporter of Midland Memorial Hospital for many years, having worked with Martin Allday, Jim Allison and John Dorn to secure the passage of the vote creating the Midland County Hospital District (MCHD) in the fall of 1977. The creation of the District became effective April 10, 1978, which happened to be Ed’s birthday. Midland County voters elected Mr. Magruder to be a Director and the President of the Board of Directors of MCHD, where he served faithfully for the next five years.
After his last term expired, Ed was asked to begin serving as a Governor of Midland Memorial Foundation, a post he held until he became Governor Emeritus in 2008. Mr. Magruder continues to participate actively in the regular board meetings of the Board of Governors providing a perspective backed with many years of experience.
In addition, Ed Magruder has served as a board member on many Boards of Directors of nonprofit organizations, including MHMR and the Buffalo Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Magruder also served on the City of Midland Planning and Zoning Commission and on the City Council. He subsequently was elected Mayor of the City of Midland and served two terms in that position in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Ed Magruder’s heritage of service to his community continues in the hearts of his children. Because endowments are permanent gifts of which only a portion of the interest earned by the gift is spent, Elaine, Fran and Kay’s gift to establish the Edwin H. Magruder, Jr. Endowment Fund will provide a lasting legacy for the future of Midland Memorial Hospital and the Permian Basin.

Nursing Scholarship Program
The Nursing Scholarship Program is designed to offer financial assistance to qualified students with the goal of providing Midland Memorial Hospital with well trained, dedicated nurses. The program is based on the philosophy that "home grown" staff are loyal, have pride and roots in the Permian Basin, and desire to remain in Midland. We are proud to offer a program that not only fills our need for professionally trained nurses, but also is an asset to our community through the provision of well paying job opportunities for Midland residents.

Foundation News & Events
The Vision Is Becoming Reality!
As we observe the ongoing progress of the new patient tower, we are constantly reminded of the generosity of our donors who have made everything possible. We are thrilled that plans are on time and under budget, and would like to share the most recent construction update:
- Central Utility Plant (CUP) - on the outside of the building, roof work and exterior finishing are underway. Inside of the building, piping and pump installations continue. The three new chillers should be in operation around the end of July.
- Parking Garage - Concrete footings were poured the week of July 5th and the assembly of precast concrete wall panels should start around the end of July. The parking garage will begin taking shape in August.
- Foundation and site work progress is hard to see, but with concrete panel installation beginning, the progress is more visible.
- On the outside of the building, exterior waterproofing in preparation for connecting the new tower to the existing building is almost complete.
- Excavation work for the basement will continue.
- The new tower crane is complete. The crane stands 220 feet tall to the top and has a jib length (reach) of 262 feet.
- Two harvesting tanks have been installed to collect rain water to use for irrigation purposes. These tanks are buried underground and will hold almost 60,000 gallons of water. Although only a third of the collection points are connected, the tanks are already about half full with recent rains.
- On the inside of the building, work continues on new Cysto rooms which are scheduled for completion in November.
You can find more information regarding the new patient tower at http://www.midland-memorial.com/PatientTower.aspx .

Memorial Forum
Memorial Forum, organized by Midland Memorial Foundation, was established to unite a growing group of Midland's young, influential professionals who share Midland Memorial Hospital's mission to ensure caring, quality health care for all community members, regardless of their ability to pay.
The Memorial Forum, while not a fundraising support group, will develop ideas that will strengthen the work of Midland Memorial Foundation. The Forum will serve the community by offering young professionals the opportunity to:
- work directly with healthcare professionals on issues facing the future of health care;
- provide a voice for their generation in the future of health care in the Permian Basin; and
- return to the community with information and advocacy.
The Forum will also afford its members an opportunity to network and gain exposure to a variety of issues impacting Midland Memorial and the health care industry.
The Foundation welcomes this dedicated group of young leaders who will help pave the way for the future of health care at Midland Memorial Hospital.
